I run Vmware Workstation on my Windows PC's and VMware fusion on Mac.  I love them both and have never had any problem with them.  I've used VirtualBox since it was a Sun product and while it works relatively well I've had a few corruption issues that would have really pissed me off if they were anything more than just linux distros I was testing out.

I decided after running both for a while now I'm switching to straight VMware

Hi all,

OK, I will have the opposite opinion from the other, and my choice is definitively turned to Virtualbox.
Two simple reasons:

  • I will start about the price: VMware cost around 250$ - VM Virtualbox cost always 0$
  • Now, I will speak about performance. I'd used to use VMware for a long time and when I discover Virtualbox, I was really surprised, because, Virtualbox consume less computer resource.
To my eye, this software is more performant in comparaison to VMware.
Then, for me VM Virtualbox is the winner.

I always had issues with usb on virtualbox.  Which I never had on workstation or player.  So I always stick with vmware player.  Course my next test is to run on my linux laptop running kvm!   But haven't had time to test that yet!

VMware products. Simply because the copy-paste functionality matters alot to me. Graphics drivers work better as well.

I figured I would chime back in since it's been a while since I posted my thoughts on the 2. Lately I've been using pure Vbox it's a lot easier to install Virtualbox Guest Additions than it is VMware tools plus its free and does the job. I only use VMWare player when I run a boot to root image that was made using vmware. All in all it comes down to preference  and its good we all use didferent Vm software so when one of us has an issue someone can most likely have a fix for each.

I have to agree I went from vmware to virtualbox... When you have limited space on your drive virtualbox helps with that. rather then taking up all the space like 10gig it only uses what is needs only. In vmware you have to put aside a whole 10gig even tho  you only use 3gigs... all that other space it take up.

Hmm VMware has an option to set the virtual HD to 'dynamically allocated'  :)

It fills up as you use it.

My favorite part is the export to .OVF file so I can save the OS on an external drive and switch it to other pc's. Vbox also has a few other features I use daily and just works for me. I've had some issues with VMWare and just gave up a few months ago and haven't really had anything I could think of break or not work in Vbox " Crossing Fingers"
