So what are the languages you *must* know in infosec research?
« on: September 22, 2014, 12:38:05 PM »
Hey all...

So I mess around in a number of languages, but I'm thinking rather than knowing a lot of little bits about a lot of different languages, I would really like to knuckle down and get 3 or 4 more in depth understanding..

I'm thinking of spending time learning the following;

Python
C++
Ruby
PHP (w/SQL)
Perl

What's your thoughts? I guess the languages of choice is dependant on the target, however I feel core skills we should all have a few we are comfortable in from the get go...

In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act....

It's been a hot minute since this topic was posted but I thought I would put in my 2 cents anywhoo.

I've been in the industry for over 20 years now and currently I would recommend the following in order of importance (My opinion)

1.) Python (learn 3.x if you have no prior knowledge. 2.6 will just set you back)
2.) Bash scripting (Or whatever flavor shell you prefer. i.e. ZSH, CSH etc.)
3.) Ruby (for more Metasploit pwnage)
4.) Objective language of some sort (i.e. Objective C)
5.) SQL (MS SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB etc.)
6.) Assembly and/or C for reverse engineering if that's your thing.

I use many more languages and tools but those 6 are my go-to's.
