ArchAssault Menu on Manjaro KDE
« on: December 11, 2014, 07:49:19 AM »
so I had openbox Manjaro, but I did not like it so I switched to KDE

I'm trying to figure out how to add the ArchAssault menu to kde manjaro,

when I had openbox I noticed that they did not have a menu and submenu for ArchAssault, it installed the tools under other and system. (not sure if I messed up during repo install)

was anyone successful in adding a menu and submenu of all the tools on kde for this?

on ArchLinux wiki I found a section that asked to add "exec openbox-kde-session" to  .xinitrc

but it did nothing (was I suppose to be on openbox instead of kde for it to work)

Any help is appreciated

Thank you

Manjaro is your OS, KDE is your DE. My opinion, Stick with OpenBox, KDE is huge and messy. Also you cannot un-install Konqueror tmk.

My memory of KDE is that it is also very customizable, I assume this is pretty easy.

When you say "they", I scratch my head.. Manjaro will not automatically create sub-menus for you. This needs to be configured within OpenBox. I doubt many users of Arch run with KDE but with some great google-fu i am sure you can remedy this.

This has nothing to do with your context menu....... See here

Sorry, As this does not answer your question. I do not use KDE. Hopefully i shed some light on what you are wishing to do.

Due to the differences in kde and openbox you cannot convert the menu wiithout  alot of manual work. We on the ArchAssautl team are more inclined to openbox, so we will probably never build a KDE instance.

Pretty sure you can have the xfce-panel installed in KDE - the xfce-panel should show what you want.
You could also trying using the lxpanel.

You will of course have to remove the kde panel:
http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/01/22/how-to-remove-kde-40s-panel/

Tweaking or Frankenstein-ing distros can be fun but very time consuming and frustrating. However I think its the quickest way to learn the differences between the distros, dms, wms, etc.

The best DE to use would be lxde as it uses openbox as its default WM.

so I thought I try openbox again (not used to it always had kde)

is there a way to auto generate the menu instead of manually editing everything you install something new?

also why LXDE, what are the advantages and disadvantages in your opinion ?

thanks in advance

@Nix, Bust out a VM and see what you think of different configurations, WM/DEs etc.. Basically boils down to personal preference. Once you know your environment inside out, You will find a much more rewarding experience online and easier to handle your "distro"..

@Nix To answer your questions about LXDE, its a more simplified Desktop environment that uses the openbox window manager. Our ISO uses a window manager for its GUI instead of something like gnome, kde, or lxde those are Desktop Environments which use a window manager. Technically you could use the openbox WM with gnome, or kde, by as mmwwaaa said its best to load up a VM and play with the DE and Wm's to see which suits you best.
