I was using the 14.9 catalyst. they worked ok except for all the power they were pulling plus they have a bottleneck :( and a built in temp limit that's kinda low.

That was the first thing i did when i got them :P  . the cards worked great when benchmarking but when actually cracking  a list of hashes not so well .. 

The 295X2 requires nearly 550W when using oclHashcat, but it is only a 500W card. So the firmware will throttle the GPUs to keep the power draw under 500W. This is what AMD calls "PowerTune." It dynamically manages clocks and voltages to prevent the card from drawing too much power.

The card also has a maximum temperature of 75C, unlike the 290X which has a maximum temperature of 95C. This means if the card starts to get anywhere near 75C, the firmware will throttle the GPUs to keep the temperature down. This limit is way too low, but there's nothing you can do about it.

Both of these things make the 295X2 a poor choice for oclHashcat use.

Ahh Got ya! my bad :) I have the R9 295x2, But i don't use them for cracking just yet, Waiting for oclhashcat to let us use the newer drivers
The card will still work with hashcat. Just tune it down and you will be ok :)

Far out this is thread?! That is some delicious looking machines, my crap PC is getting too old, what's the setup on that machine? Like what motherboard etc?

I don't know much about hash cracking either, would love for someone to explain it to me, like from getting the hashes to cracking them, what tools are used, how its done, and if it's worth it(like how long to crack with a setup like that?)

You can use any motherboard with any processor that supports PCI-E for Graphic cards,
Till recently AMD graphic cards dominated the cracking world due to the way it was built. However now NVIDIA has come up with some awesome graphic cards that draw alot less power for a descent hash cracking rate. Its important as some hashes can take days, weeks, months.. etc.. to minimise your electricity costs it can be quite useful.

So what hash cracking apps like hashcat do, is that because a Hash is irreversible it will take a list from a dictionary or bruteforce and convert it to the same hash algorithm (MD5, MD4. SHA1, etc) and compared it to the hash you are trying to crack. Once it finds a matching Hash, it will display which password matches the one of the hash you are trying to crack.

You can also crack hashes with your CPU, but that will take much much longer. So (correct me if I am wrong guys) but Hashcat (CPU) oclhashcat (AMD gpu) cudahashcat (NVIDIA gpus) are specifically designed to each of the hardware categories mentioned.

As far as being worth it is up to you. How often do you find yourself cracking hashes and would it be worth the money to you.. they also have nice free online hash cracking services like http://www.hashkiller.co.uk/.. but it is limited.

How long to crack ?  ... It takes me under 2 min to run the Rockyou.txt list  and under an hour to go through a 200gb folder of dictionaries. But if the password isnt in the dictionaries  then no luck. With hashcat you can bruteforce and so on but it can take more time. the only bruteforce i have done so far was for a WPA 10 digit password that took under 2 min.. i think Ch3rn0byl did it around the same time also with his machine.
