Interesting program...
NegativeScreen. Inverts the colors shown on your screen as an overlay. So works on every window, on videos, vlc, etc.

For any mac users out there, Nocturn is a program like this for mac.  Lives up in the tray and you can quickly switch from day/night mode.  Helps fix the irritated spouse who is trying to sleep!
