How to configure Kali-linux

Greetings

Kali-linux is made to work right off the box , but there are some configurations left for you to do !
The list is quite long , but you need to get the settings that apply to your need.

things to do after installing kali linux v2
#########################################


1) fix device not managed error

vi /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf

change to "managed=true" under "ifupdown":

[ifupdown]
managed=true

2) modify apt repository:

vi /etc/apt/sources.list

# debian security updates
deb http://security.debian.org/ jessie/updates main contrib non-free

4) update/upgrade/dist-upgrade

apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y && apt-get dist-upgrade -y

5) enable sound on boot

apt-get install alsa-utils -y

right click volume icon and select "sound preferences."

switch output volume slider to ON.

6) install archive manager

apt-get install unrar unace rar p7zip zip unzip p7zip-full p7zip-rar file-roller -y

7) add regular user

useradd -m -s /bin/bash username
passwd username
adduser username sudo
adduser username staff

8) install flash:

apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

update-flashplugin-nonfree --install

9) install system and performance monitoring tools - htop, iotop, collectl, lsof, monit, nmon, sysstat:

apt-get install htop iotop collectl lsof monit nmon sysstat -y

(dstat and vmstat are useful too but should come with kali already)

10) install network and traffic monitoring and analysis tools - nethogs, iftop, vnstat, acct, suricata, nagios, iptraf

apt-get install nethogs iftop vnstat acct suricata iptraf -y

pretty much all the commands can be run or explained by simply typing the command itself

nethogs requires the interface:

nethogs eth0
nethogs wlan0

acct is a service that should be set to autostart:

/etc/init.d/acct start

11) install lshw (and graphical interface if you want):

apt-get install lshw lshw-gtk -y

to run:

lshw

organized readable output:

lshw -businfo

generate hardware report:

lshw -html

run graphical interface:

lshw-gtk &

other hardware info commands:

hwinfo
hwinfo --short
hwinfo | more
dmidecode
cat /proc/cpuinfo
free -m
cat /proc/version

12) install gdebi package manager and add-apt-repository for PPA repositories:

apt-get install gdebi -y

apt-get install python-software-properties
apt-get install apt-file
apt-file update

create the following file to mimic saucy/oneiric/lucid/raring (use any of those) for add-apt-repository to work on kali:

vi /usr/sbin/add-apt-repository

13) create xkill keyboard shortcut:

go to applications >> system tools >> preferences >> system settings

click "keyboard" and select the "shortcuts" tab.

select "custom shortcuts" on left menu and click the "+" sign at the bottom.

enter:

name: xkill
command: xkill

once added, select to assign keyboard shortcut (i use alt+super+x)

14) install vpn

apt-get install network-manager-openvpn network-manager-openvpn-gnome network-manager-pptp network-manager-pptp-gnome network-manager-strongswan network-manager-vpnc network-manager-vpnc-gnome

add VPN accounts.

set DNS servers to free/uncensored:
89.233.43.71
89.104.194.142

or install dnscrypt and setup (later)

15) install tor/vidalia/privoxy

apt-get install tor vidalia privoxy mixmaster tor-arm apparmor-utils apparmor -y

start vidalia and open settings. click on "advanced." select "use TCP connection (ControlPort)" under "Tor Control". change "Tor Configuration File" value to "/etc/tor/torrc". change Data Directory value to "/var/lib/tor". run commands:

adduser root debian-tor
chown root:debian-tor /var/lib/tor

edit privoxy config:

vi /etc/privoxy/config

forward socks4a   /   localhost:9050   .
forward 127.*.*.*/   .
forward 192.*.*.*/   .
forward localhost/   .

download and run once adblock plus filter script to create /etc/conf.d/privoxy-blacklist:

run script again to download and install blocklists.

**to block tracking via embedded social media plugins (facebook "like", twitter "follow" etc.), add these lines to the end:

install obfsproxy:

add these lines:

edit proxychains config:

vi /etc/proxychains.conf

make sure proxy_dns is uncommented and the following is set under [ProxyList]:

socks4   127.0.0.1 9050

edit proxychains hardcoded DNS server to send DNS requests to tor:

vi /usr/lib/proxychains3/proxyresolv

DNS_SERVER=127.0.0.1

if receiving a timeout error or connection refused, for some reason commenting this:

#dig $1 @$DNS_SERVER +tcp | awk '/A.+[0-9]+\.[0-9]+\.[0-9]/{print $5;}'

and adding this, seemed to fix it:

dig $1 @127.0.0.1 53 | awk '/A.+[0-9]+\.[0-9]+\.[0-9]/{print $5;}'

also go to about:config in firefox/iceweasel or chrome://config in chrome and set the following:

network.dns.disablePrefetch = true
network.proxy.socks_remote_dns = true

start NTP service to avoid tor "no recent usable consensus" error:

service ntp start

restart tor/vidalia and privoxy:

service tor stop
service privoxy stop

vidalia
-or-
service tor start
-or-
/etc/init.d/tor start

start privoxy:
/etc/init.d/privoxy start
-or-
service privoxy start
-or-
systemctl start privoxy.service

enable privoxy service at boot:

update-rc.d privoxy defaults

to run a 2nd privoxy service without tor:

copy config directory "privoxy" to "privoxy2":

cp -a /etc/privoxy /etc/privoxy2

edit config file:

vi /etc/privoxy2/config

change the port from 8118 to 8119 for the following:

listen-address 127.0.0.1:8119
listen address [::1]:8119

comment out forward for tor:

to send only .onion addresses through tor, add the following:

create init script for privoxy2 (just copy the original one):

edit init script:

vi /etc/init.d/privoxy2

change the following:

Provides: privoxy2
NAME=privoxy2
DAEMON=/usr/sbin/privoxy
CONFIGFILE=/etc/privoxy2/config

add privoxy2 to rc-directories:

update-rc.d privoxy2 defaults

start it:

/etc/init.d/privoxy2 start

check to see if there are 2 different privoxy processes:

ps aux | grep privoxy

test proxychains:

proxychains iceweasel notworth.it/getip.php

set browser proxy settings to:

privoxy with tor:

HTTP 127.0.0.1:8118
HTTPS 127.0.0.1:8118
SOCKS5 127.0.0.1:9050

privoxy without tor except .onion:

HTTP 127.0.0.1:8119
HTTP 127.0.0.1:8119
SOCKS5 127.0.0.1:9050

to add burp suite to proxy chain with tor and privoxy, go to proxy options in burp suite and set proxy to 127.0.0.1:8118. then set browser proxy to 127.0.0.1:8080

install foxyproxy for iceweasel/firefox and proxyswitchy for chrome to switch between proxies more easily.

16) install dnscrypt:

first, get dependencies:
apt-get install build-essential

download and install latest libsodium package:
http://download.libsodium.org/libsodium/releases/

wget http://download.libsodium.org/libsodium/releases/libsodium-0.5.0.tar.gz -O - | tar -xz

install library:

cd libsodium-0.5.0/
./configure && make
make install
ldconfig
cd ..
rm -rf libsodium*

install resolvconf:

apt-get install resolvconf

download latest dnscrypt package:
http://download.dnscrypt.org/dnscrypt-proxy/

disable local resolver, restart network manager, and add dnscrypt nameserver entry with resolvconf:

add -d or --daemonize flag to daemonize dnscrypt-proxy service.

edit network connection and under IPV4 settings, select "Automatic (Addresses only)" then set DNS server to 127.0.0.3.

for IPV6 do the same but set DNS server to ::3

service network-manager restart

i made a script to more easily start/stop/restart the dnscrypt-proxy service.

create dnscrypt.sh and paste the following -or- you can create as /etc/init.d/dnscrypt to run on startup:

17) enable auto-login:

19) install i2p:

make sure to follow prior instructions on installing PPA repositories before proceeding (#11).

run in terminal:

/usr/sbin/add-apt-repository ppa:i2p-maintainers/i2p

it will download GPG key for i2p.

or add the repositories and download/install the key manually:

wget https://geti2p.net/_static/debian-repo.pub
apt-key add debian-repo.pub

vi /etc/apt/sources.list.d/i2p.list

paste into file and save:

deb http://deb.i2p2.no/ stable main
deb-src http://deb.i2p2.no/ stable main

then:

apt-get update
apt-get install i2p i2p-keyring i2p-router -y

vi /etc/default/i2p

add:

ALLOW_ROOT="true"

run command:

dpkg-reconfigure -plow i2p

i2prouter start

run as daemon:

/etc/init.d/i2p start

configure:
http://127.0.0.1:7657/confignet

set following options:

externally reaching hostname or ip address:
- hidden mode (do not publish ip)

ipv6 configuration:
- prefer ipv4 over ipv6

udp port:
-completely disable

tcp configuration - externally reachable hostname or ip address:
- disable inbound (firewalled)

save settings

to use i2p as proxy, set

protocol HTTP
server - localhost:4444

protocol HTTPS
server - localhost:4445

to send i2p traffic through privoxy:

vi /etc/privoxy/config

add:

forward .i2p localhost:4444

20) install exFAT support for SD cards:

apt-get install exfat-utils exfat-fuse fuse

mount using command:

mount.exfat-fuse

21) install bluetooth:

aptitude install bluetooth

enable on startup:
update-rc.d bluetooth defaults

start:
/etc/init.d/bluetooth start

install and enable bluetooth audio (make sure debian wheezy sources are used):

apt-get install pulseaudio-module-bluetooth pulseaudio-module-gconf bluez-audio blueman

22) install chrome

wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add -

vi /etc/apt/sources.list

add following line:
deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free main

or run command:

apt-get install google-chrome-stable

create chrome profile directory:

mkdir /home/username/chrome

run as root with:

google-chrome-stable --user-data-dir=/home/username/chrome

run as different user:

sudo -u username google-chrome-stable

23) install AMD proprietary driver:

before you do this, make sure the latest driver supports your video card. if it doesn't, go to the AMD site and download the appropriate driver for your card. in fact, just download the package from the AMD downloads site and run it - it should automatically do everything :P

here's the hard way, for supported video cards:

apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree
apt-get install amd-opencl-icd
apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

apt-get install fglrx-atieventsd fglrx-driver fglrx-control fglrx-modules-dkms -y

a bunch of windows will pop up; unless it's an error just select "YES"

test:

fglrxinfo
fgl_glxgears

generate xorg.conf file:

aticonfig --initial -f

xorg.conf file will be located in /etc/X11 directory

vi /boot/grub/grub.cfg

add "radeon.modeset=0" at end of following line as such:

linux    /boot/vmlinuz-3.14-kali1-<differs depending on 32/64 bit> root=UUID=<some long-ass string> ro initrd=/install/gtk/initrd.gz quiet radeon.modeset=0

reboot

launch catalyst control center:

amdcccle

24) if you want to chat/email you can download icedove (thunderbird for linux) and pidgin (need to install and enable OTR plugin).

apt-get install icedove pidgin pidgin-otr -y

25) to install bittorrent and transmission GUI:

apt-get install bittorrent transmission

Well I've only gotten to section 15 so far on my VM but the links for the repos appear to be incorrect and I couldn't sort the proper addresses as those subdirectories didn't seem to exist on the domains they had there.   Also vidalia doesn't want to install (possibly because of the repo issue)  If I find answers to this I'll post here but for now, time to go home.

New to Kali and very much appreciated, thanks.

Skiped the flash and GPU part tho, last time I tried to get driver support for my HD7950 Kali would only boot as shell, probably due to my lack of knowledge. Just reinstalling now and found your tut, happy new year :)
