Dilemma
« on: December 07, 2016, 11:14:41 AM »
Hi everybody,
Actually I'm searching a way to create a stable (pentest) environment.

For the moment I'm using Kali Linux on my HDD.
I love a lot working into my kali linux distro, or every kind of Linux distro. But sometimes install a game is cool, just (easily) install soft. Or just run windows soft like Olydbg, etc...

So which environment guys do you use? Windows host + Linux VM?

I use Windows 10 WITH the anniversary update. It's quite nice!
I use Workstation with lots of VM's which includes Windows 7+, as well as Windows Server 2008+. Both 32bit and 64bit.
I have several flavors of linux for both 32 and 64 bit.

The only reason I use kali is if any of the guys are having trouble with it. Other than that, I don't use it.

My primary OS vm is Linux Mint 18 (Sarah) and she is gorgeous ;) I have everything I need installed and everything works. I found you don't need to patch for wireless attacks also which is nice.

Got questions, feel free to shoot

I actually plan to install windows 7 or windows 8.1, I don't know for the moment, on my computer.
4years later I bought an Alienware laptop so It's fucking hardcore to install linux distro on it.

Linux Mint Cinnamon is "hardware" friendly?

About Workstation, you pay a licence to use Vmware Workstation order than the "shitty" Vmware Player?
I gonna create something like a "secondary main OS", kali linux vm with 2 screen display, 4Gb of RAM, etc....

So if you're going to torrent it ;), use Win7. The torrent ed versions afterwards suck dick.

It is hardware friendly, but I don't understand what you are asking.

Get the trial and use that. See how you like it and if you're still at it, I'll be more than happy to give you a lil sum sum ;)

Also, screw dual booting. That's retarded. Just use vms

I'm using VirtualBox a the moment, but I gonna try Vmware Workstation.

A long night in front of me to create all backup.

The Win 10 pro may be good, but if you can't get the pro, the regular sucks.
What they are now calling the "Disk" often tops out at 100%, just for opening a browser window or using a vm.
Or actually it randomly just tops out at 100% just to annoy me.
Personally, the regular Win 10 is about as fast as Win 95! Not really an improvement....
I use RTLE for pentesting; but win 10 for gaming (which I have not had time to do for a long time).

I guess I have "Pro" on my Surface Pro 2 and my Desktop (Upgraded from 7 Pro).  I've had a few weird issues but updates tend to fix them pretty quick.  Overall I'm surprisingly OK with Win 10 (Big Brother stuff aside).  It seems like M$ can seem to get out one decent OS every other try.  98... ok ME c'mon, XP OK, Vista WTF, 7 Pretty Good, 8 WTF, 10 Ok

Without Win on my side for last 5 years, have some VM's for vSpeher client, but even that i'm going to remove, now from ESXI version 6, free web admin panel is doing good job and it will be even better in the future.

For lab, in some situation you can use your Pi, but as you may know, not for everything. For that I got one server online with Xeon and 32gb of ram, and at home, some old pc with ESXI i 2 VM's max. Now with new pc I can have all on same pc, but not always "real life" stuff.

And thanks to internet, you have so many CTF's and and virtual box vm's ready for download and hacking.

I just use Windows as main and run lots of VM's although majority of people in security field give me a lot of shit over it cuz I dont use Linux as main =P. VM's should be fine

If you have the linux skills what does it matter which host OS you use... honestly I've found windows version of VMware and VBox to be better than the linux variants for use as a host.
