Laptop for kali Linux
« on: December 25, 2015, 03:12:34 AM »
Hi everybody,

Today I create this new topic because I don't know what laptop can I buy for kali Linux.
I don't know if it' better to take 2Go RAM or 4Go RAM, if I need to chose a specific wireless card ?
It's better to buy a Lenovo ThinkPad ? The new generation or ancien genration ?

If someone have a good laptop for pentest not expensive ?

Thank a lot. Have a nice Christmas.

Kali will pretty much run on anything. I would suggest finding the best bang for your buck laptop depending on how much you have to spend.

I would suggest 4 gigs of memory or more tho .

You will want an external wireless card that will be capable of injection if you plan on testing WIFI

Hi

From my own experience , you are better off with a more less 3-5y old laptop , avoid new generation cheap hardware.
a DELL is recommended . ATI or Nvidia graphics is a must.
4GB Ram is sufficient to run Kali, mind you , the higher Ram the faster password cracking speed will be.
If you sat a monkey down in front of a keyboard, the first thing typed would be
a unix command.

What's up fSociety....

If you are looking for a very reliable external wifi adapter, check out the ALFA AWUS036H. In my opinion, it is one of the best on the market. The link below is for the deluxe kit which includes the Wifi Adapter, 5dBi & 9dBi Antennas, Window Mount, & Carrying Case. You can find and purchase just the adapter w/ 5dBi antenna, but the kit is a good starter & its not too bad of a price.

Link for Amazon:

This looks like a closed topic, but my 2 cents:

Avoid ANY consumer grade stuff (That includes Dell Inspiron)  If you get dell go with a latitude or precision.

If you're looking at older machines (not knowing your budget) I'd go for either a Lenovo Thinkpad (not ideapad) or an HP Elitebook.  I've had Kali, Arch, CentOS, RHEL running on on thinkpads and they are great.  I have a small X201 right now running Arch that was a super high end machine in it's day and will still beat the crap out of most cheapo best buy stuff.  It has a 1st Gen i7 processor and 8 gig of ram.  They also have a mSata port which will allow you to run a SSD as well as a regular 2.5" hdd for mass storage in a small space.

Hi all,
I already buy an ALFA AWUS036H with the 7dBI antenna, and he work really good.

Thank for you help C0ldg0ld, but I have a low budget ( ridiculous ?), actually 300 €.
And I just want to buy my first ( cheap ) pentest/programming laptop. So for the moment I don't have 1,000 €

Thank all.

Wanted to say this from the start, GO SECOND-HAND bro.. You dont wanna be running hacked together scripts found from the net on new hardware.. Not if your new..

I have only bought 1 outta 4 lappys new. It's cost me the most in everything.. My last buy was a......hp.....something with 6GB RAM, plenty of HDD. 2GB GPU and a broken screen...... Now you could buy a new screen or just remove it. I chose the later.

SO as I said.. Look around, second hand is the shit. YOu buy "new" from the store and you get last gen shit anyways.

Who said anything about 1000 euros?  You should be able to get something for under 300 all day long.  Like Mmwwaaaa said.   You can get way more for your money if you get used.

For example:  Here's pretty much my exact machine with the difference being I've added a different HDD and put a piece of tape over the webcam!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-X201-Thinkpad-Tablet-Pen-Touch-Core-i7-2-13ghz-160GB-webcam-Win-7-Pro-IBM-/391342655312?hash=item5b1dd70750:g:MeIAAOSwCQNWb1Sz

That's obviously not the only example but it's one of many laptops out there you can get for not much money.
