Virtualbox or Vmware Player
« on: April 17, 2013, 12:18:43 PM »
Hello All,
Well i'm trying to find out how many people run either software. I know myself i'm running virtualbox but it really sucks now... Why you ask after there update a couple days ago it's all buggy now when starting vm, and guest software is screwing things up. I tried it 2 different laptop one HP and other one Dell. still the same issue ... I'm thinking I might move back to vmware player..

What do you guys think?

This doesn't address  your question exactly but after going through similar issues I invested in vmware workstation and I'm happy with the change.    :) ;)

I'm using Vmware workstation all the time.

Don't have any experience with virtualbox.

I've used both and used to prefer VMWare.

Until I had to use a VMWare View Client for a virtual desktop at my client. You cant have View and VM Player on the same machine. I switched to Virtual Box and love it.

can i clear the air talk...
virtualbox _ been there , done that over it
vmware workstation , vmware player _ been there, still there , loving it

though i preffere workstation to player, since i gave it a test, have stock to my alienware desktop pc, used to have a alienware lappy and desktop and macbook, just to run different os , give them all a try find out this or that.. but after my first dose of vmware workstation, my alienware lappy and macbook, are laying still in a corner of my home, since have got 3 external 1tb each of WD hdd, i just split them into 2 each, and install different os.. run all at a go from vmware workstation, do numerous thing at a go.. well i can keep praising the vmware company all day.. but ill stop here... it just simply saves all the table space of having to arrange loads of pc  if you know what i mean ;)

Yeah VMWare workstation is night and day difference for me as well, can't go back to Virtualbox after having all my windows tabbed and all. I can also drag the VM & VMX files to another drive and just fire up a machine it's simple as can be.

Well I will have to install it on my laptop and see how it goes... I just need to find the client for vmware since it's only 30 days, trial plus run it from my windows machine.

i have used VM ware to emulate Linux on windows XP and was not impressed as it takes lots of memory and a fast CPU. better to run linux Os directly.

Well so far it's running good. The only thing I had trouble was with guest software ... But I was able to figure it out after 4 hours of searching the net...

So far it's running good. Had one issue but I think i figured it out. I notice when I removed trucrypt from my drive it ran fine. I wonder if the software has some issue.

i have the same question as the topic suggests but, i'm interested in backbox linux as a host os. so what do you think guys, on a linux host, which one works better? vmware player, vmware workstation or virtualbox (non-ose)? what about 3d acceleration? and what about solid state drives? which one works as it should? is it even worth spending time on optimizations like choosing right filesystem etc. or is the improvement just marginal (so that the company can propagate their product  :D )? hope you understand what i'm asking  :)

I prefer VirtualBox, it has snapshot. VMPlayer can't do that.
I use it with Vagrant to emulate my VPS without working on it.
